Winston Churchill wearing his famous Siren Suit

winston churchill siren suit

Winston Churchill wearing a grey-striped siren suit sometime after World War Two (likely during 1949).

Churchill was frequently photographed in his siren suits, and he had a variety of them made from different materials and in different designs. He even wore one in his 1942 visit to the White House, and at the 1945 Yalta Conference.

The siren suit was a one-piece garment which was meant to be easily pulled on over other clothes when the air raid siren sounded. It was designed both for warmth and for accessibility, in case the urgency did not give an individual time to dress adequately.

Several of the siren suits worn by Winston Churchill are exhibited in museums across the United Kingdom, including the Imperial War Museum in London.
