German prisoners of war awaiting their transport at the Bernières-Sur-Mer railway station after the events on D-Day. June 1944 vs. modern days (2022).
The train station was a key part of the coastal rail line connecting Caen to Courseulles.
Bernières-sur-Mer was a crucial D-Day landing site within the Juno Beach sector. The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada secured the village by 9AM on June 6th, 1944, despite facing heavy casualties and intense German resistance.
Today, the site is no longer an active train station, serving as a tourist office instead. The town is still heavily marked by the events of World War II, with relics and monuments scattered all around the village.
