
King Michael I of Romania testing a Russian light machine gun in Sevastopol, 1942, as the Romanians were advancing into Soviet territory alongside their German allies.
The photograph was smuggled to neutral Portugal and sent to New York City via boat. It arrived there and was archived in December 1942.
On August 23rd, 1944, King Michael I staged a coup to overthrow Romania’s head of state and Axis ally, Marshal Ion Antonescu.

King Michael was the last living (active) head of state from WWII. He passed away on December 5th 2017, aged 96. He was mourned as a national symbol by most Romanians.
