Laid down in October 1913, USS Pennsylvania was not sent to serve in the European waters during World War I, aside from transporting president Woodrow Wilson to peace negotiations in France.
During the Second World War, USS Pennsylvania survived the Pearl Harbor attack and went on to see heavy action in the Pacific theater (Aleutians and Makin Atoll, Marshalls and Marianas campaigns, Philippines operations).
After the war, USS Pennsylvania served as a target ship for atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll (Operation Crossroads) in 1946, before being decommissioned on August 29th the same year.
During the Pacific campaign, battleships were used mainly for offshore bombardment of land based enemy positions and also as anti aicraft support for aircraft carriers.
