Soviet soldiers of the 1st Baltic Front during an attack in the Latvian city of Jelgava on August 16th 1944, towards the end of Operation Bagration.

The 1st Baltic Front was a major formation of the Red Army during World War II and was involved in multiple important battles, most notably Operation Bagration between June 22nd and August 19th 1944, fought mostly in Soviet Byelorussia, but also in the Baltic states and Ukraine.

Operation Bagration represented the largest military defeat in German history, as their front line was totally shattered and casualties mounted to no less than 450.000 soldiers, while other 300.000 were cut off and surrounded for over a year.
